Comedic Art Exhibits

Add ‘Is This Thing On?’ to the long list of reasons to visit Los Angeles. This exciting new art exhibit showcases the illustrations of comedians from 100 different artists and is currently on display in the Gallery 1988: Melrose.

Keltie Ferris

Keltie Ferris' second solo show went up this week at Sean Horton's Gallery in NYC and it's well worth checking out (if only to window shop as there's only one piece still available).

 

KAWS @ Aldrich Contemporary

After a roller coaster traveling weekend of the Mass MoCA, the Clark and some other artist haunts, I ended up at the Aldrich Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut. What a special place. There were some great exhibitions, but the killer show was the first solo museum exhibit by Brooklyn-based artist known as KAWS.

The project offers a retrospective look at his well-known street art, apparel, product, and graphic designs, and debut a selection of never-before-seen paintings, sculptures, and drawings which blur the conventional boundaries between art, design, and culture. Go see. 

Art Walk Chelsea

 

See you at the first annual Chelsea Art Walk, a cooperative event organized by over 25 galleries throughout northern Chelsea. Participating galleries will offer extended hours and special events that showcase the vibrancy of the summer arts scene in Chelsea, while local sponsors will offer food and drink specials throughout the evening.

Affordable Art Fair

Billed as the place to discover and buy works of art from today's hottest young talent and well-known names, with all works priced from just $100 up to $10,000.

Size DOES Matter

FLAG Art Foundation wanted to do a show on how scale is used in contemporary art. To find a curator who was up to this huge task, they went to the bench. Seven-footer and NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal took on the assignment which included big names and big pieces. Chuck Close, Ron Mueck, Jeff Koons, Elizabeth Peyton, Corban Walker and Cindy Sherman are among the dozens of artists represented.

Spotlight on DiverseWorks

Last weekend I visited Houston's DiverseWorks. DiverseWorks is an art space dedicated to delivering new visual and literary arts. That may be the understatement of the year. Not only is there a full roster of programming year-round, but they are incredibly active throughout town creating unique art experiences in one form or another.

How do they raise money you ask? Certainly through donations, but they also host two amazing fund raisers per year. One is through a raffle (more like an art scramble) at the Center. Attendees receive a raffle ticket. If your number is called, you have :15 to scramble and pull a piece of art (that's been donated by local artists) off the wall that's yours to keep. Their second fundraiser is a gala event. This year, it's called Debutantes Run Wild! It will be a playfully irreverent ball. Fun!

Damn, Flavin

This week will likely feature a range of Houston-inspired posts as I just returned from a great trip there with an awesome group of people. Among my many 2010 goals, I want to buy a fluorescent glowing piece of art. So, that made our visit to the Menil Collection's Dan Flavin exhibit that much more exciting. Richmond Hall's space features three great rooms of Flavin's work including this one with a rainbow of bright lights. Something I could easily live with. Bottom line: Get to Houston, ASAP!

A Show of Blogs

One of my favorite blogs is now a show. Beginning tonight James Danzinger (of Danzinger Projects) is opening  an exhibition "The Year in Pictures" presenting a selection of photographs featured in the blog The Year in Pictures.

Begun in 2007, the blog has been a platform of his personal enthusiasm about the medium – a place to share good and new work that is sent to me or that I see on my travels; alert readers to new exhibitions, books, and other photography events; and reflect on ideas and issues. Since it's inception, the blog has posted over 500 stories, received over a million visits, and is viewed an average of 50,000 times a month.
